MoCA's ratification of version 2.0 provides operators and OEMs with a technology roadmap of continued high performance and reliability for multi-room DVR, personal content sharing, OTT content sharing and IPTV applications. MoCA 2.0 offers two new performance modes with net or actual throughputs of 400 and 800 Mbps, respectively, each with a corresponding turbo mode. Likewise, two new lower power modes increase energy savings. Expanded operating frequency better accommodates all pay TV service providers. MoCA 2.0 is both evolutionary and revolutionary. Like MoCA 1.1, MoCA 2.0 is backward compatible with MoCA 1.0 to ensure preservation of operator investment in current equipment.

DirecTV's new n3D channel is the first to bring home all 3D, all the time

DirecTV and Panasonic flipped the switch on the nation's first 24 hour 3D network this morning, sending n3D out on channel 103 to all properly equipped viewers. Of course, if you've got your 3DTV, your H21 or higher satellite receiver and some 3D specs, what will you be watching? Besides events like the upcoming NASCAR race from Daytona, an exclusive 3D feed of the MLB All-Star Game and (locally available) broadcasts of a Yankees/Mariners series, July's schedule is packed with demo content like Guitar Center Sessions with Peter Gabriel and Jane's Addiction and Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia. Beyond that there's a few IMAX flicks on the new DirecTV Cinema in 3D channel, and World Cup games from ESPN 3D through video on demand, check Zap2it for a full schedule but don't be shocked to see a lot of repeats, for now.

3D幻影術 免戴特殊眼鏡

〔自由時報 特約記者鄭曉蘭/綜合報導〕日本獨立行政法人「情報通信研究機構」(NICT)以吉田俊介為首的研究團隊日前表示,他們已經成功研發全球首台無需特殊眼鏡的3D立體影像投射裝置。雖然立體影像的精緻度仍有待提升,但科幻電影中懸浮於眼前的立體影像絕非痴人說夢。日後我們很可能坐在自家客廳中,就能體驗親臨現場的逼真視覺感受。

 

據日本「產經新聞」報導,吉田的研究團隊在直徑約80公分的桌子底下,設置圓錐形顯示器,輔以排列成圓形的96台投影機,以及能讓光線垂直擴散的特殊技術,讓坐在桌旁的人得以同時看到桌面的立體影像。在以往的實驗中,該項裝置曾成功顯示出高約5公分的立體影像,而在發表會上該裝置則投射出如汽車模型、茶壺或塑膠玩具鴨等物品的縮小立體影像。

 

該裝置與平面電視必須搭配特殊眼鏡的立體影像不同,能讓多數人同時從各種角度觀賞到立體影像,日後可望運用於航空管制、防災對策演練或商業行銷展示等用途。吉田研究團隊希望能在今年秋天獲得進一步突破,讓該裝置顯示立體動態影像。

 

吉田表示,「目前影像還不是很鮮明,但日後如果能提高影像鮮明度,並研製出更大的顯像裝置,我們就能以立體動態影像重現各種賽事、活動或表演。」

Christie creates baffling 3D HD CAVE 'visual environment,' or your average Halo display in 2020

Whenever the word "Christie" is involved, you can generally count on two things: 1) you can't afford it and 2) you'll want to afford it. The high-end projection company is at it once again, this time installing a truly insane visual environment at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. The 3D HD CAVE is intended to help researchers find breakthroughs in biomedical studies, and while CAVE itself has been around for years, this particular version easily trumps prior iterations. For starters, it relies on eight Christie Mirage 3-chip DLP projectors, all of which have active stereo capabilities and can deliver a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,920. Yeah, that's 3.68 megapixels per wall. The idea here is to provide mad scientists with a ridiculous amount of pixel density in an immersive world, but all we can think about is hooking Kinect and the next installment of Bungie's famed franchise up to this thing. Can we get an "amen?"

LG aims to up 3D notebook shipments by 30 percent

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea's LG Electronics Inc said on Monday it aimed to raise shipments of 3D notebook computers by 30 percent in 2011, as it makes a huge bet on booming sales of 3D products led by televisions.

LG, the world's second-largest maker of TVs, forecast global sales of 3D notebook computers would increase five fold next year to 1.1 million units and jump to 13.8 million units by 2015.

"With the availability of more 3D content, consumers are enjoying a new experience, and we think that'll drive growth of the 3D computer market," Harrison Park, LG's mobile communications PC business team leader, told reporters.

Interest in 3D has grown fast driven partially by the blockbuster movie "Avatar," released at the end of 2009, which single-handedly raised awareness to 60 percent from 40 percent among U.S. consumers.

LG introduced on Monday three models of 3D notebook computers priced at between 1.6 million won ($1,331) and 1.9 million won, a roughly 20 percent premium to conventional 2D products.

With the need to wear glasses to watch 3D content singled out as a major obstacle to the technology's takeoff, 3D is more likely to succeed on screens watched by a single viewer like computer and cellphone displays, some experts say.

LG said earlier this year it was aiming to sell one million 3D televisions this year.

sony 360-degree volumetric display: the stuff sci-fi dreams are made of

Sony just introduced a video demonstrating this amazing new 360-degree display technology that’s something you might find in a James Cameron movie.

The new autostereoscopic display projects 360 individual slices of an image onto an array of special LEDs, providing a volumetric display you can walk around and view from any angle – without glasses. It can even recognize gestures, allowing you to manipulate the object displayed on screen.

Sony Patents Alternative to Split-Screen MultiplayerA couple of patents published recently show that Sony's looking at stereoscopic video for more than just 3D gaming; it could take the place of split-screen local multiplayer.

Broke My Controller noticed the patents, filed a year ago and published on Thursday, that show a method for rendering separate images on the same screen, which are then filtered by glasses worn by player 1 and player 2. The glasses also look like they have earbuds, meaning players get a separate audio feed, too.

Ideally, this would allow both players the view of an entire screen, without either the distraction of their opponent's activity to the side, or the ability to cheat by looking at his screen to see where he is.

The drawback, of course, is you need a 3DTV. And you have to wear the glasses. But as something that's more functional than cosmetic, I could dig it.

     微星(2377)力拚AIO一體成型桌上電腦商機,下半年將推出全球首款3D一體成型電腦,最快將在8月初台北電腦應用展上市開賣。微星指出,目前日本、歐美等地通路商對3D AIO的反應還不錯,陸續接到訂單,並已開始出貨。研調機構預估,微星今年出貨挑戰85萬台,卡位全球第三大AIO品牌。

     3D風潮從筆電漫延至AIO,微星將推出全球首台具3D功能AIO電腦,繼宏碁、華碩、聯想等NB廠推出3D筆電,3D商機進一步延伸至螢幕及AIO一體成型機種,除微星外,華碩3D AIO也計畫在第3季上市。

     微星內部目標訂下,今年AIO出貨挑戰100萬台,以今年1,100萬台全球AIO市場規模預估,市占率挑戰近1成,次於蘋果、惠普,在全球AIO市場稱老三,企圖在PC領域中,以AIO打敗聯想、宏碁、戴爾、華碩等勁敵。

     根據研調機構估計,微星今年出貨量約在85萬台~100萬台之間,落後蘋果的420萬台,以及惠普的150萬台,僅微幅領先位居第四大的聯想。研調機構預估,聯想今年AIO出貨量約在80萬台左右,是微星AIO市占攻防戰最強勁的對手。

     微星下半年將推出4款AIO新機種,螢幕尺寸包括22吋以及24吋,以及2款19吋、20吋商用AIO機種,同時搶攻AIO消費以及商用市場。微星指出,公司策略上要積極進軍AIO市場,除了以新機種應戰,也同時推出全球首款3D AIO電腦,以功能做出市場區隔。

     微星表示,3D AIO已開始出貨,台灣市場最快在8月初登場的應用展上市,其他如日本、歐美等地通路也已開始鋪貨,從通路商下單狀況來看,反應不惡。微星指出,該款AIO採用AMD顯示卡,搭配奇美電的24吋3D螢幕以及快門眼鏡解決方案,售價約在6萬多元左右。

     微星指出,為降低3D進入門檻,採用AMD顯示晶片,成本相對較低,與同樣24吋不具3D功能的AIO相較,後者售價4萬多元,兩者之間的價差僅在2萬多元左右,差異並不大。

Samsung's new plasmas will do 3D for much cheaper - Update: $989 for 50-inch 720p

Looks like Samsung's 3D Blu-ray players aren't the only ones coming in cheaper versions, as it's unveiled the new 680 Series and 490 Series plasma HDTVs. Both were shown off in Korea yesterday, though the US website only features a product page for the 50-inch PN50C680 so far, showing off its 1080p specs and DLNA access. You will give up a few features from higher end plasmas, which add picture-in-picture, widgets, a higher contrast ratio and slimmer designs to the mix. The PN50C490's situation is a bit murkier, but FlatpanelsHD reports it will be the first 720p 3DTV of the current generation. With current series 4 plasmas retailing for around $720, it could also be the first flat 3D set to crack (or at least approach) the $1,000 barrier -- if you're willing to miss out on the extra pixels.

Update: A listing on ABC Warehouse shows the PN50C490 with a few specs plus $1,099 MSRP, but already up for preorder for just $989. Perfect for some PS3 gaming or ESPN3D watching, right? Of course, as a few commenters have mentioned, you can get a 60-inch 1080p projection 3D capable HDTV from Mitsubishi for even less, so that's hardly your only cheap 3D option. [Thanks, John Doe]
