The power-use effectiveness (PUE) ratio of typical data centers average at 1.92 meaning roughly half of the power goies to things that do not involve computers like airconditioning. But Yahoo’s new data center in Lockport, New York boasts a PUE ratio of 1.08 meaning 92 percent of its power usage is actually consumed through computing functions and only 8 percent goes to lights and operational equipment. How did they do this?
Inspired by chicken coops, the unusually tall and narrow design effectively help channel the warm air from the hot aisles in the data center outdoors. Lockport, the location of the data center is also ideal because it is in the path of cold winds directed into the data center through “economizers”
