This Tiny Thing is Actually a 64GB integrated SSD From SanDisk

It's a new world record, this time in the "smallest SSD" category. Available in 4GB - 64GB capacities, SanDisk's integrated "iSSD" is destined for tablets and really, really slim laptops.

With a 160MB per second read time and 100MB per second write time, the iSSD doesn't exactly compromise on speed for slinkiness—it weighs less than one gram, and measures 16mm x 20mm x 1.85mm. I'm developing a weight complex already. [SanDisk]

Flash Memory Summit, Santa Clara, Calif., August 18, 2010-SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), the global leader in flash memory cards, today announced the first product in a new category of embedded solid state drives (SSD) that are smaller than a postage stamp and offer higher capacities and performance than existing storage solutions. The SanDisk® integrated SSD (iSSD), the first high-capacity product within this new category, is designed for use in fast-growing mobile computing platforms such as tablet PCs and ultra-thin notebooks.

Computing platforms are responding to consumer demand for highly portable, ultra-thin, anywhere-anytime access to the Internet and their favorite content. The SanDisk iSSD drive is the first flash SSD device to support the industry standard SATA interface in a small BGA (Ball Grid Array) package that can be soldered onto any motherboard, and that is fast enough for use with advanced operating systems in next-generation mobile computing platforms.

"The new category of embedded SSDs should enable OEMs to produce tablets and notebooks with an unprecedented combination of thin, lightweight form factors and fast performance," said Doron Myersdorf, senior director, SSD marketing, SanDisk.

"With our embedded flash storage leadership, SanDisk believes it is uniquely positioned to deliver the ultra compact SSD solutions needed by OEMs."

"The ultra-thin tablet and mobile computer markets are expected to experience tremendous growth over the coming years, and new advanced platforms will introduce new requirements for storage solutions," said Jeff Janukowicz, research manager, solid state drives, IDC. "New embedded SSDs such as the SanDisk iSSD drive, which meet the stringent size requirements of small and light devices while offering greater performance, are designed to enable OEMs to deliver an enhanced user experience in their next-generation designs."

The SanDisk iSSD offers 160MB/sec sequential read and 100MB/sec sequential write speeds for greater system responsiveness*. With no moving parts, the tiny, robust drive is designed to deliver the durability needed by portable devices that are frequently dropped or jostled. SanDisk iSSD offers a substantial level of design flexibility for OEMs who seek to create the next generation of tablets and ultra thin mobile devices based on the standard SATA interface.

The SanDisk iSSD is available now for sampling to OEMs, and is being evaluated by top-tier manufacturers. Measuring 16mm x 20mm x 1.85mm and weighing less than one gram, the drive uses a BGA form factor and a SATA interface, and is compatible with all leading operating systems. SanDisk iSSD is available in capacities ranging from 4 gigabytes (GB)1 to 64GB, with pricing dependent upon the quantity ordered.

Sunflower Street Lighting Features Efficient, Cost-Effective And Eco-Friendly City Lighting

What happens when there is no power supply in the street light, in worse case, what if the light is broken? Unless you have a bionic eye or using a night vision goggles, walking through a congested road during dark nights would be a horrible experience.

Sunflower street lighting not only eliminates the power issue through solar photovoltaic modules on the upper surface of the lamps, it ensures that if for any reason one light goes down, other lights will still continue to work. Moreover, incorporating the LED light instead of usual fluorescent bulb has made the concept up to eight times more efficient, cost effective and eco-friendly by reducing the mission of CO2. Each lighting consists 5 individual lamps on different cell modules and comprises one battery only to store the energy gathered from the sun during daytime. Finally, it the sunflower like appearance of the concept will enhance the décor of a city just like a thrived garden with lots of bloomed sunflower.

飛利浦軟性OLED螢幕概念智慧型手機Fluid

Supercomputing on an Android Phone

Supercomputing on an Android Phone

It seems like an outlandish claim, but the brainiacs at MIT and the Texas Advanced Computing Center insist that they've created an Android app that is genuinely capable of doing supercomputing on a phone. Here's how they did it:

First, the researchers performed a complex series of calculations on the Ranger supercomputer—calculations that only a real, take-up-a-whole-room supercomputer could handle—and then generated a reduced model of the results. They turned that model into an Android app, loaded it on a Nexus One, and then were able to adjust the parameters of the complex data set and visualize the results in seconds, from just about anywhere. Using a reduced model of the real supercomputer's work seems sort of like cheating to me, but then again who am I to question the guys at MIT.

The researchers claim the app is doing real-deal supercomputing because it accounts for the error introduced by the reduced model, giving the user a range of solutions for their chosen parameters. One of the researchers explains, "We have a bound on how much accuracy we're losing with our reduced model, so we can say with rigor that we're doing supercomputing on a phone."

The team thinks this type of system will almost certainly have real world applications, such as landmine detection, architectural modeling, or performance optimization for cars or planes. One researcher suggested that the reduced model app could receive input data from sensors and dictate small optimizations, say to an aircraft's ailerons or flaps, on the fly.

But simply showing how the smartphones we carry can be used to tackle such complex computational tasks is impressive in and of itself. As one of the TACC researchers said, "It's demonstrating that with a small processor, you can still get a meaningful answer to a big problem." [TACC via Slashdot]

How to create a 'super password'

Want to keep your online data secure? You may need a 12-character password, researchers say.

(CNN) -- Say goodbye to those wimpy, eight-letter passwords.

The 12-character era of online security is upon us, according to a report published this week by the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The researchers used clusters of graphics cards to crack eight-character passwords in less than two hours.

But when the researchers applied that same processing power to 12-character passwords, they found it would take 17,134 years to make them snap.

"The length of your password in some cases can dictate the vulnerability," said Joshua Davis, a research scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

It's hard to say what will happen in the future, but for now, 12-character passwords should be the standard, said Richard Boyd, a senior research scientist who also worked on the project.

The researchers recommend 12-character passwords -- as opposed to those with 11 or, say, 13 characters -- because that number strikes a balance between "convenience and security."

They assumed a sophisticated hacker might be able to try 1 trillion password combinations per second. In that scenario, it takes 180 years to crack an 11-character password, but there's a big jump when you add just one more character -- 17,134 years.

Passwords have gotten longer over time, and security experts are already recommending that people use full sentences as passwords.

Here's one suggested password-sentence from Carnegie Mellon University:

"No, the capital of Wisconsin isn't Cheeseopolis!"

Or maybe something that's easier to remember, like this:

"I have two kids: Jack and Jill."

Even though advances in cheap computing power are making long, complicated passwords a necessity, not all websites will accommodate them, Boyd said.

It's best to use the longest and most complex password a site will allow, he said. For example, if a website will let you create a password with non-letter characters -- like "@y;}v%W$\5\" -- then you should do so.

There are only 26 letters in the English alphabet, but there are 95 letters and symbols on a standard keyboard. More characters means more permutations, and it soon becomes more difficult to for a computer to generate the correct password just by guessing.

Some websites allow for super-long passwords. The longest one Boyd has seen is at Fidelity.com, a financial site that lets users create 32-character passwords.

On a Microsoft website devoted to password security, the tech giant tells the password-creating public not to use real words or logical combinations of letters. That keeps you safer from a "dictionary attack," which uses a database of words and common character sequences to try to guess the code.

The Georgia Tech researchers carried out a "brute force" attack when they determined that passwords should be at least 12 characters long.

To do so, they deployed computer graphics cards, which are cheap and can be programmed to do basic computations very quickly.

The processors in those cards run simultaneously, trying to guess all of the possible password combinations. The more characters in a password, the more guesses are required.

But if your password has to be really long in order to keep up with this computational power -- and if you're supposed to have a new password for each website you frequent -- then how are you supposed to remember everything?

That's a real problem, the Georgia Tech researchers said.

There are a few solutions, however.

A website called Password Safe will store a list of passwords for you, but Boyd and Davis said it may still be possible for a hacker to obtain that list.

Other companies sell tokens that people carry around with them. These keychain-sized devices generate random numbers several times a minute, and users must enter those numbers and a shorter password to log in.

Some sites -- Facebook for example -- are marketing their log-ins and user names as a way to access sites all over the Web.

That's good for the user but is potentially dangerous because if hackers figure out a single password, they can access multiple banks of information, the researchers said.

The reason passwords have to keep getting longer is that computers and graphics cards are getting faster, the Georgia Tech researchers said.

"These things are really inexpensive -- just a few hundred dollars -- and they have a performance that's comparable to supercomputers of only just a few years ago," Boyd said of fast-processing graphics cards.

Maybe our brains will have to get bigger and faster, too. We'll need some way to remember these tome-like character strings.

Mars technology creates self-dusting solar panels

Solar panels at solar energy plant Dust and grime can dramatically reduce the efficiency of solar panels

Self-cleaning technology developed for lunar and Mars missions could be used to keep terrestrial solar panels dust free

Dust deposits can reduce the efficiency of electricity generating solar panels by as much as 80%.

The self cleaning technology can repel dust when sensors detect concentrations on the panel's surface have reached a critical level.

The research was presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Large scale solar installations are usually in sunny, dry desert areas where winds can deposit layers of dust over the solar panels.

Solar panels in the Mojave desert cover many kilometres. In one month, dust fall can reach as much as 17kg per square kilometre.

The dust reduces the amount of light that enters the panels and so the electricity they can generate.

Major headache

Cleaning dust manually is not practical because of the scale of the installations and the scarcity of water in desert regions. Keeping them clean is a major headache for the companies deploying the installations.

Working with Nasa, Malay Mazumder from Boston University originally developed the technology to keep solar panels powering Mars rovers clean.

Mars Exploration Rover Spirit Solar panels powering Mars rovers need to be protected from the dusty Martian environment

The self cleaning technology uses a layer of an electrically sensitive material to coat each panel.

Sensors detect when dust concentrations reach a critical level and then an electric charge energises the material sending a dust-repelling wave across its surface.

Mazumder says that this can lift away as much as 90% cent of the dust in under two minutes and only uses a small amount of electricity

There are large scale solar installations generating electricity in the United States, Spain, Germany, the Middle East, Australia and India.

Dust deposition rates are highest in the Middle East, Australia and India.

Dust-busting technology

Mazumder believes his is the only automatic dust-busting technology that does not need water or any kind of mechanical movement.

While currently less than 0.04% of global energy production comes from solar panels, the popularity of solar energy is increasing. The use of solar panels went up by 50% between 2003 and 2008.

Mazumder and colleagues hope the self cleaning technology could play an important role in increasing the efficiency and reducing maintenance costs of generating electricity from sunlight.

They expect the technology to be commercially available within one year.
