Coulomb's CT500 EV charging station now available for residential use

Coulomb Technologies has already managed to get thousands of its electric vehicle charging stations installed across the US (and beyond), but it's now looking to grab an even larger footprint -- it's just announced that its CT500 Level II ChargePoint Networked Charging Station is available for residential use. That will give you a 7.2 kw output and full compatibility Leviton's Evr-Green EVSE "plug-and-play" pre-wiring kit for a supposedly easy installation -- and, of course, an industry standard SAE J1772 connector to accommodate a whole range of electric vehicles. No word on pricing, but you can contact the Coulomb distributor nearest you (there's nine in the US at the moment) for a quote and any additional information you might need. Campbell, CA July 26, 2010 – Coulomb Technologies today announced the availability of its residential charging stations for electric vehicles. Coulomb's new CT500 Level II ChargePoint® Networked Charging Stations are designed for home and light commercial use. The announcement expands Coulomb's spectrum of products for EVs from home to Level III fast charging stations. CT500 charging stations will be sold through Coulomb's OEM and distribution channels. The ChargePoint Network is based on an open interface, standards-based architecture that provides station owners with a complete set of business applications to market and bill for electric transportation fueling services, and provides drivers with EV charging applications to make fueling easy. The CT500 stations will be on display at the Plug-In 2010 Conference and Exposition in San Jose, California on July 26-29, 2010 in Coulomb booth #110.

"The addition of our residential charging stations coincides with the introduction of electric vehicles to the mass market. The CT500 charging station is a 7.2 kw single output station designed for residential and light commercial applications. The station delivers Level II (208/240 V @ 30 A) charging and is compatible with plug-in electric vehicles that comply with the SAE J1772™ plug-in electric vehicle-charging standard. The station's small size and flexible network interfaces make it an ideal solution for utilities, homeowners, fleet managers, and auto manufacturers. The CT500 is compatible with Leviton's recently announced innovative Evr-Green™ EVSE installation system. This industry-first prewire mounting system provides for simple plug-in installation for new charging stations.

'Flying Car' Concept from Terrafugia Gets a Design Tweak

Terrafugia has released new artists' renderings and updated specs for its Transition vehicle – the world's first flying car – at a press conference at the AirVenture aviation event in Oshkosh, Wis.

The Transition is technically known as a roadable aircraft, or a plane that can fold up its wings to achieve street-safe (and legal) dimensions.

The vehicle has been given a mild design makeover, and is now imbued with a more car-like front courtesy of traditional headlights and a license plate holder.

Terrafugia envisions the eventual production version as having covered front wheels set off from the body of the car by tubes, which is more in line with the light sport aircraft that the airplane-half of the Transition represents.

On the engineering side of things, the next generation of the vehicle has an improved wing that folds up smoothly per a command from the cockpit, rather like a convertible.

Other newly updated features to the car-plane hybrid include rear-wheel drive with a continuously variable transmission, an independent suspension and a touch screen interface in the cockpit, or driver's seat, depending on one's location in the air or on the ground.

The prototype Transition flew its maiden voyage in March 2009 and passed with flying colors. Terrafugia's flying car cleared a key regulatory hurdle last month when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a 110 pound (50 kilogram) weight exception for the aircraft's class.

That extra weight was requested for accommodating modern safety features such as crumple zones in the nose of the vehicle. A rigid cage to protect vehicle occupants has also just been announced for the evolving Terrafugia concept.

Performance-wise, the Transition is supposed to get 35 miles per gallon (14.9 kilometers per liter) of gasoline on the road and have a flying range of 490 miles (787 kilometers) per full tank. With a sustained cruising speed of about 105 miles (172 kilometers) per hour, that equals over four hours up in the sky.

The first deliveries to customers are slated for late 2011, and Terrafugia is now accepting refundable $10,000 deposits to reserve a flying car.

也許你現在覺得根本無所謂,但當某一天你公司印表機送修的時候,就會真正知道便攜式個人印表機的重要了。以後將會是個便攜的時代,實際上各個高瞻遠矚的印表機廠商早已瞄準了這塊市場,仔細想想這些年的電子產品不都是在向著便攜化發展嗎?今天介紹的這個列印棒StickPOP,就是號稱現在最小的便攜印表機。

JihunKang / YounghoLee / JieunLee / ChangsuLee四位設計者共同完成了這個美麗的設計,它是目前為止我見過最輕巧的便攜式印表機。這台印表機省去紙張托盤,和必要的多彩墨盒,尺寸僅有23x6cm,可以裝在你的手提袋或是包包裡。不光是小,它也很智能,不需要電腦就可以獨立運作,將盤插上,然後啟動列印就好了。不過這玩意兒只是概念品,還沒有正式的實體產品問世,畢竟有太多的問題要解決了,比如如何識別托盤裡要列印的文件,如何支不同格式的文檔等。

Head-mounted display controls video camera, keeps you painfully single

At the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, Satoshi Nariai demonstrates something called the head-mounted Mobile Video Communication System. With acceleration and position sensors built into a head-mounted display, the remote camera moves in relation to your head's movements. The researcher sees this being used primarily for videoconferencing where he thinks it will promote effective communication by allowing eye contact. Of course, there's one problem with that -- if you're both wearing large displays on your face, how could you possibly make eye contact? Unless, of course, you paint eyes onto the outside of the display itself, Loony Tunes-style. That said, it's still an impressive piece of gear. See it in action after the break.

This Wind-Powered Cart Is Actually Faster Than The Wind

This wind-powered cart breaks the rules of science because it's actually faster than the wind itself. When the wind was only blowing at 20mph, the cart managed to hit speeds of 50mph. Here's how it works.

Of course, the cart, called DWFTTW, is ultra-lightweight and super aerodynamic. That's a given. But the science (or magic) lies in how its propeller and wheels interact: the 17 ft propeller is driven by the cart's wheels.

It's sort of confusing to think that the wheels turn the propeller, since the propeller also turns the wheels, but thanks to a very capable of transmission and the wind being an external power source, it manages to go faster than the wind.

Maybe these guys can cook up a solar panel that can give more power than the sun next. [Faster Than The Wind via Wired]

In the future, we will look at these 885-foot-wide structures in the middle of the ocean and we won't even blink. But, right now, I'm having a hard time imagining them spinning en masse at 20 revolutions per minute.

It's the new Aerogenerator X Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, which will be completed by 2014. Instead of using a traditional vertical structure, this wind turbine will rotate horizontally. Its design will enable it to generate twice the power of previous designs, according to the manufacturer. That's 10 megawatts per hour. The most powerful—and largest turbine in the planet at 413-foot high—now generates a bit over seven megawatts.
