AMOLED need more power at white background than LCD no Apple product in 2011 with OLED
We got the chance to interview Barry Young the managing director of the OLED-Association and we discussed the near future of OLED Displays, the truth about the power consumption from OLEDs and LCD Displays, and when we see the first Apple product with an OLED Display. And when we can expect the first Tablet-Pcs with Super-Amoled.
In 2011 LG,CMEL AUO start also the production of small/medium sized OLED panels. The last years the only company which produced OLED panels was Samsung Mobile Display with a market share of 98 percent.
In 2011 the companies are able to produce 68 million panels instead of 34 million in 2010, that means that all manufacturer can return to OLED instead of LCD.
Barry Young about the truth of the power consumption of OLEDs:
It always depend on the content, as example if the application has a white background like excel or word a AMOLED need 20 - 30 percent more power than an LCD. But if you run a video or you show some pictures OLEDs would use less power than an LCD. It always depend on the content. If you show a video AMOLED uses 15% of the power that an LCD would use.
The OLED material is improving 10-20 percent per year, so Barry Young expect in the next two year AMOLED will use less power than an LCD also at white background applications.
Barry Young gives also some insider infos when we see 7-9 inch OLED panels from Samsung mobile display for the tablet pc market.
The 7 inch OLED panels are realistic in end of 2011, because Samsung Mobile Display needs some time to ramp up the production of line of that size.
Also we discussed when Apple will use OLEDs in their products. Barry young think that the first product from Apple with an organic light emitting diode Display will be in 2012. Apple want to use OLEDs in the near future, for a few days Apple filed 3 patents for future products.
